Mr. John VandenBerg
I was born and raised in the greater Los Angeles area in the towns of Bellflower and Cerritos. After graduating from the local Christian high school, I attended Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa. While at Dordt, I met my wife Alecia (Engelsman). We were married in 2008 and enjoyed living in Visalia, California for several years. We started to grow our family and now have two beautiful daughters, Kamryn and Sadie. While our kids were young, we decided to move closer to family here in Michigan (2018). My family and I enjoy road trips and taking our family gnome, Gerome, with us for pictures. I love soccer (the real football), reading a good book, getting outside for walks and bike rides, and spending time with my family.
I graduated in 2007 from Dordt College with my B.A. in Elementary Education along with an emphasis in mathematics. I then moved out to Visalia, California (south of Fresno) and taught at Central Valley Christian Schools. While there, I taught first grade for 8 years and then changed to teach fourth grade for 3 years. I’ve been teaching for over a decade, but I still love all the challenges and blessings that come with the job. I’m a forever learner and know there is always room to improve personally, academically and spiritually. I’m honored to be a part of the ACS staff and look forward to what God has in store for us all.
Being the product of Christian school education, I have seen how teachers have influenced me in the past. I believe that I have a unique opportunity to reflect God’s great mercy and grace in my classroom, just like the teachers in my past. I believe that every child is unique and can be taught lifelong skills within my classroom. Yes, my role as a teacher is to introduce students to curriculum and instruction; however, teaching all of those from a Christian perspective is my most important job of all.
